Even babies understand power
Lee el post completo en la fuente original
Whether it's a physical fight or a power struggle, intuition tells us that size matters. Babies may agree, a new study suggests.
Even as early as 10 months old, children seem to have concepts of social dominance and hierarchy, Danish researchers say in a study published in the journal Science.
"What we are arguing is that we have an innate concept of social dominance," said Lotte Thomsen, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Copenhagen and lead author of the study. "It’s hard to see how they [infants] could have learned to understand social hierarchies from scratch."
Of course, you can't ask an infant what he or she thinks about winners and losers. But psychologists say that if babies find something surprising, they will… Continue reading

13 Iowa football players hospitalized after workout
Lee el post completo en la fuente original
Thirteen University of Iowa football players were hospitalized after a strenuous workout this week.
They were found to have rhabdomyolosis, several days after taking part in an off-season workout, according to CNN affiliate KWWL.
When a muscle ruptures, it releases its cellular content, including particles called myoglobin, into the body. These particles get caught in the kidneys and can block the organ's functions and in worst cases, cause death. It’s often seen in crush injuries – it was a common killer of earthquake survivors in Haiti in 2010. Rhabdomyolosis has been known to occur after difficult workouts especially in boot camps.

Alzheimer’s called ‘defining disease’ of baby boomers
Lee el post completo en la fuente original
As any family who has gone through it can tell you, Alzheimer's disease is tragic on a number of levels. Once vibrant men and women become shells of the people they once were. Not only do memories fade, there also is anger. And loneliness. Former first lady Nancy Reagan famously referred to it as "the long goodbye."
As the first baby boomers turn 65 this year, a new report suggests they will be especially hit hard. One out of eight boomers will develop the disease, according to the report released by the Alzheimer's Association. That comes to about 10 million people. Of those who reach 85, nearly one in two will get it. "Alzheimer's is a tragic epidemic that has no survivors. It is as much a thief… Continue reading

What can I do about my celiac disease?
Lee el post completo en la fuente original
Every weekday, a CNNHealth expert doctor answers a viewer question. On Friday, it's Dr. Melina Jampolis, a physician nutrition specialist.
Question asked by Patrick of Omaha, Nebraska:
How long does it take to feel the benefits of a gluten-free diet once diagnosed with celiac disease? I have been living gluten/casein free for over five years now and have yet to see much improvement.
Expert answer:
Hi Patrick. Since celiac disease affects approximately 1 percent of the population and is often undiagnosed until later in life, your question provides a great opportunity to educate people about this disease.
Gluten-free diets are essential for people who have celiac disease, a lifelong genetic condition in which the body does not tolerate the protein… Continue reading

In defense of crunch: What we use (and don’t)
Lee el post completo en la fuente original
Last week, writer, cancer survivor and mother of two young children, Amanda Enayati wrote about pursuing a healthy life for her family by cutting excessive sugars, bad fats, dyes, preservatives and pesticides from their diet. Today she tells of reducing her household's "toxic burden."
“Crunchy” is what we used to call our handful of friends who seemed to live on the outer edges of reality when it came to healthy foods and personal products. We loved our friends, of course, tolerated their quirks, but mostly passed on using their homemade patchouli bath products or eating their tofu scramble served on a bed of raw zucchini noodles.
In the days when I first began considering how to lower my family’s household toxic burden… Continue reading

What the Yuck: Should my breasts get bigger during PMS?

Too embarrassed to ask your doctor about sex, body quirks, or the latest celeb health fad? In a regular feature and a new book, "What the Yuck?!," Health magazine medical editor Dr. Roshini Raj tackles your most personal and provocative questions. Send 'em to Dr. Raj at whattheyuck@health.com.
Q: Is it normal for my boobs to get a whole cup-size bigger during PMS? It's such a dramatic change that I need two different sets of bras!
Yes, breast inflation is completely normal. During the premenstrual phase, we have higher levels of the hormones progesterone and prolactin, both of which can cause breast tissue to swell and milk glands to increase in size.
Plus, our bodies retain water during that premenstrual period. The change in… Continue reading

Flu and You: Virus widespread in half the states

Half of the states have widespread flu activity, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
From January 16 to 22, flu activity increased and three flu-related deaths were reported in children, according to the CDC. During this flu season, which started in October, there have been 13 confirmed pediatric deaths.
The highest levels of flu-like activities were reported in the South and Southeast, including Alabama, Louisiana, Virginia and North Carolina.
To keep up the awareness about personal responsibility of preventing flu spread, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases has launched a public education campaign reminding Americans to cover their sneezes and to practice good hygiene.

NEW WDTPRS MUG – Newman “To be deep in history”

The other day I was having a skype conversation with His Hermeneuticalness himself, Fr. Tim Finigan. He mentioned Bl. John Henry Newman’s phrase “To be deep in history is to cease to be a Protestant.”

QUAERITUR: I haven’t been to confession for 10 years! I don’t know what to do!

From a reader:
I haven’t been to Confession in 10 years, and I’ve only gone three times back when I was still in grade school. It’s possible I wasn’t catechized in the sacrament properly because I don’t recall requiring the Act of Contrition, saying any lines for my first two Confessions, nor the proper format for confessing sins.
My last Confession was in a high school theatre and the priest kept tersely correcting me when I confessed my sins wrong, and seemed quite annoyed he had to walk me through it. Now the thought of going makes me anxious to the point I feel ill.
I’ve scoured the internet for guides to confession and examinations of conscience, as well as reviewed your 20 tips, but… Continue reading

WDTPRS: Wherein Fr. Z rambles about the Collect for the 4th Ordinary Sunday, or, “All you need is love”.
Lee el post completo en la fuente original
Today’s prayer was not in the post-Tridentine editions of the Missale Romanum but it does have its origin in the Leonine Sacramentary or, as it is better titled by its editor, the scholarly L. Cunibert Mohlberg, the Veronese Sacramentary.
Were you to hear this prayer intoned in Latin, or at least in an accurate translation, you would be thereby transported back 1500 years to our most Roman of Catholic roots.
COLLECT – LATIN TEXT (2002MR):
Concede nobis, Domine Deus noster,
ut te tota mente veneremur,
et omnes homines rationabili diligamus affectu.
ICEL (1973 translation of the 1970MR):
Lord our God,
help us to love you with all our hearts
and to love all men as you love them.
Is this what the Latin really says?

Today’s TLM sounds (some excerpts)
Lee el post completo en la fuente original
Here are some audio clips, stitched together, from Holy Mass this morning at Holy Innocents in NYC. This was a Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form. We were happy to have good polyphony and Gregorian chant … as there is every Sunday.
I left a period of silence leading up to the consecration. Silence is a necessary part of our worship.
This was made from a small digital recorder in the edge of the pulpit, so don’t expect good balance between celebrant at the altar and pulpit, and also the choir in the loft.
After Mass!
There was the Holy Innocents’ version of coffee and doughnuts.
There were also empanadas and bagels with schmeer and fresh croissants.
To wash it down…. Mystic Monk Coffee!

Grumbling about Anglicanorum coetibus
Lee el post completo en la fuente original
With the provisions of Anglicanorum coetibus, Benedict XVI (the Pope of Christian Unity) opened a door for and gave a place to Anglicans who desired unity with the Bishop of Rome in the Catholic communion. Certainly they were distressed by the tomfoolery going on the Anglican Communion, but they ultimately made a positive decision for union with Rome rather than negative decisions, as a reaction against the Anglican implosion.
I saw this on the site of the UK’s best Catholic weekly, the Catholic Herald. William Oddie reports on a BBC interview which was obviously skewed against Pope Benedict and Anglicanorum coetibus. I think an 8 year old would find Tina Beattie’s argument here absurd to the point of being risible.

Summorum Pontificum, reforming the reform, and resisting the reform
Lee el post completo en la fuente original
Pope Benedict, in his ongoing effort to heal the rupture that occurred in our worship when a composed, artificial rite was suddenly imposed on the Church, in 2007 put into effect the provisions of Summorum Pontificum, by far surpassing the provisions of Ecclesia Dei adflicta.
This was, on the one hand, an emancipation proclamation and, on the other, a great gift to priests and congregations.
Not all were thrilled. I note in particular some bishops who, now that Summorum Pontificum is in effect, are now eager and willing to implement Ecclesia Dei adflicta.
Too late. They had their chance.
In Ecclesia Dei adflicta, the bishops had much greater authority when it came to the use of the older, traditional books for worship and sacraments. … Continue reading

In Season: Dried Beans

Dried beans ready to be soaked. [Photo: Jenny Lee-Adrian]
Okay, dried beans aren’t “in season”—they’re always available and always the same. But this is really the season for them. As the winter months drag on, I just want to curl up on a couch with a bowl of chili that’s filled with a lot of beans—not beans that come out of a can, but beans that were soaked overnight. Dried beans are best when we’re hibernating. The beans swell and swell and swell as they stay submerged in water, and then they become soft after they’re cooked.
Beans are planted in the spring and harvested in the fall through early winter, depending on the location. The legumes are available from storage for the rest… Continue reading
