Whether it's a physical fight or a power struggle, intuition tells us that size matters. Babies may agree, a new study suggests.
Even as early as 10 months old, children seem to have concepts of social dominance and hierarchy, Danish researchers say in a study published in the journal Science.
"What we are arguing is that we have an innate concept of social dominance," said Lotte Thomsen, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Copenhagen and lead author of the study. "It’s hard to see how they [infants] could have learned to understand social hierarchies from scratch."

Thirteen University of Iowa  football players were hospitalized after a strenuous workout this week.
They were found to have  rhabdomyolosis, several days after taking part in an off-season workout, according to CNN affiliate KWWL.
When a muscle ruptures, it releases its cellular content, including particles called myoglobin, into the body. These particles get caught in the kidneys and can block the organ's functions and in worst cases, cause death.It’s often seen in crush injuries – it was a common killer of earthquake survivors in Haiti in 2010.  Rhabdomyolosis has been known to occur after difficult workouts especially in boot camps.

Half of the states have widespread flu activity, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
From January 16 to 22, flu activity increased and three flu-related deaths were reported in children, according to the CDC. During this flu season, which started in October, there have been 13 confirmed pediatric deaths.
The highest levels of flu-like activities were reported in the South and Southeast, including Alabama, Louisiana, Virginia and North Carolina.
To keep up the awareness about personal responsibility of preventing flu spread, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases has launched a public education campaign reminding Americans to cover their sneezes and to practice good hygiene.

I haven’t been to Confession in 10 years, and I’ve only gone three times back when I was still in grade school. It’s possible I wasn’t catechized in the sacrament properly because I don’t recall requiring the Act of Contrition, saying any lines for my first two Confessions, nor the proper format for confessing sins.

Here are some audio clips, stitched together, from Holy Mass this morning at Holy Innocents in NYC.  This was a Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form.  We were happy to have good polyphony and Gregorian chant … as there is every Sunday.
I left a period of silence leading up to the consecration.  Silence is a necessary part of our worship.
This was made from a small digital recorder in the edge of the pulpit, so don’t expect good balance between celebrant at the altar and pulpit, and also the choir in the loft.

After Mass!
There was the Holy Innocents’ version of coffee and doughnuts.
There were also empanadas and bagels with schmeer and fresh croissants.

To wash it down…. Mystic Monk Coffee!

With the provisions of Anglicanorum coetibus, Benedict XVI (the Pope of Christian Unity) opened a door for and gave a place to Anglicans who desired unity with the Bishop of Rome in the Catholic communion.  Certainly they were distressed by the tomfoolery going on the Anglican Communion, but they ultimately made a positive decision for union with Rome rather than negative decisions, as a reaction against the Anglican implosion.
I saw this on the site of the UK’s best Catholic weekly, the Catholic Herald.  William Oddie reports on a BBC interview which was obviously skewed against Pope Benedict and Anglicanorum coetibus.  I think an 8 year old would find Tina Beattie’s argument here absurd to the point of being risible.

Okay, dried beans aren’t “in season”—they’re always available and always the same. But this is really the season for them. As the winter months drag on, I just want to curl up on a couch with a bowl of chili that’s filled with a lot of beans—not beans that come out of a can, but beans that were soaked overnight. Dried beans are best when we’re hibernating. The beans swell and swell and swell as they stay submerged in water, and then they become soft after they’re cooked.
